Persuasion
is the main tool of salespeople as they try to persuade their customers to buy.
But we all, no matter what our profession, use persuasion to bring others to
our point of view. It behooves us all to understand how it works.
Sales negotiation training experts have analyzed persuasion as an art and have come
up with how effective persuaders operate:
- They listen very well. Rather than talk over their customers, great salespeople prime the pump of conversation and then are silent. Their objective is to try to understand their customer’s point of view.
- They restate their customer’s position as clearly and succinctly as possible so that the customer cannot help but appreciate how well they have been understood.
- They provide connections…in other words; expert persuaders have a knack for finding ways that their customer’s perspective and their own ideas intersect. They are masters of empathy. As the interests of the two sides (salesperson and customer) align, the customer is prepped to agree with the salesperson’s conclusions.
