When You Want to Seal the Deal as a Sales Negotiator

To be successful at sales negotiations, you not only need to thoroughly understand your offering and your customer.

You also need to know how to differentiate your service in a way that gets you the deal. If you are the one in charge of a sales team, providing sales negotiation training is critical. Your reps need to know how to influence the buying decision in a way that leads to the buyer’s signature on the contract.

Here’s how you can be sure your team has the negotiating skills they need:

  1. Put a formal skills assessment in place to learn what individual sales reps are doing right and where they need additional development.
  2. Provide the relevant training and the tools they need to be successful based upon the most critical negotiations scenarios for your specific situation.
  3. See that everyone involved in the negotiation process knows and supports the process.
  4. Reinforce the skills regularly and share the learning from wins and losses.
  5. Use every opportunity to demonstrate the skills. Learning should occur every day, not just in the classroom.
  6. Model the behavior you want to see. Your reps will follow your example.
  7. Ask your reps to design sales plans for their most important opportunities and to share them with the team for feedback.

Follow these tips to ensure that your team develops overall account strategies that seal the deal.
